Born on the 19th of December 2018 to Clary and Jace Fray, Nina Madeleine Fray is the youngest of the three Fray children. Her brother and sister, Jon and Merry are four years older than her. At the time of Nina's birth, the only children in the Institute were her siblings and two-year-old Nas Lightwood, but this changed a couple of years later.
After Nina turned two the New York Institute became an official place of refuge for orphaned, abandoned or otherwise ill-treated young Shadowhunters. The first arrivals, in the same year, were the three Blackthorn siblings. Seven-year-old Lucy, five-year-old Cas and two-year-old Rye.
During Nina's fourth year, another young Shadowhunter came; seven-year-old Jamie Midwinter.
The last new Shadowhunter of the New York Institute came when Nina was eight. Layla Nightshade was ten years old, and quickly blossomed under the care of Clary and Jace.
Just before Nina's fourteenth birthday, Karen Lewis, a werewolf, started recieving threatening letters, and in a bid to protect her family, moved into the Institute to live with the rest of them.
When they were both fourteen, Nina and Rye Blackthorn started growing extremely close, first with a friendship, and then with a physical relationship. They debated defining their relationship but thus far have not.
Nina shares many of her features with her older sister and her mother. Her eyes are brown, and her hair is a dark reddish-brown that she augments with different coloured dyes, her favourites being purple or blue streaks. She looks young, and is often mistaken for being younger than she is, which she absolutely abhors. Nina loves fancy dresses and spends a lot of time shopping with Isabelle Lightwood, since Clary is a fashion disaster.
Nina is the quintessential spoilt youngest in many ways. She fights to be included in the discussions and meetings of the adults and older teenagers, but when she is involved, contributes nothing but silliness. She enjoys spending her time shopping, particularly for shoes, and has a partnership on this front with Isabelle Lightwood. Nina is very artistic, like her mother, and excellent at drawing runes. Her iratzes in particular are in high demand. Nina is also extremely close to her father, Jace, and spends a lot of time with him without minding what it is they do together.
