Early Life[]
Born on the 13th of April 2014 to Clary and Jace Fray, as Meriden Isabelle Fray. Her first name was her father's idea, and her middle name comes from a promise Clary and Isabelle Lightwood made to each name their first daughter after the other. Merry has a twin brother, Jon, who was born eight minutes before her. They grew up in the New York Institute, and were the only children there for two years, during which time they were a bit spoilt. Just before Merry's second birthday, Nas Lightwood was born, and the two bonded quickly. When Merry was four, her younger sister, Nina was born.
After Merry turned six the New York Institute became an official place of refuge for orphaned, abandoned or otherwise ill-treated young Shadowhunters. The first arrivals, in the same year, were the three Blackthorn siblings. Seven-year-old Lucy, five-year-old Cas and two-year-old Rye.
During Merry's eighth year, another young Shadowhunter came; seven-year-old Jamie Midwinter.
The next two Shadowhunters, a brother and sister pair, arrived when Merry was nine-and-a-half. Topher Penhallow was exactly Merry's age, and his younger sister Illyria was six at the time.
The last new Shadowhunter of the New York Institute came when Merry was twelve. Layla Nightshade was ten years old, and quickly blossomed under the care of Clary and Jace.
When Merry was fifteen and Nas thirteen, the two chose to become parabatai, and recieved the Marks on a visit to Idris.
About six months after Merry's eighteenth birthday, Karen Lewis, a werewolf, started recieving threatening letters, and in a bid to protect her family, moved into the Institute to live with the rest of them.
Description[]
Merry has pale skin covered with faint freckles, the curse of all redheads. She looks a lot like her mother, sharing the same bright smile and red curls, but she has her father's golden eyes. Merry is short for her age, but doesn't let it bother her. She's rarely seen in dresses or skirts, and prefers to wear practical clothes; jeans, jackets and t-shirts. She's fairly petite, slim with narrow shoulders and hips.
Personality[]
Merry is thoughtful and kind, although her patience certainly had its limits. She likes children, with the exception of her sister, Nina, who gets on her nerves so often that it must be real dedication. It frustrates her that the eight minutes between her and her twin brother Jon seems to entitle him to call her his little sister, and she doesn't want his protection. She is determined to achieve something with her life beyond killing demons, and feels very much like the black sheep in her family, with different interests and ideals to her parents and siblings. She is close to some of the other girls in the Institute, particularly her parabatai, Nas, but sometimes feels more at home among mundanes.
